Every Pioneer is rated to tow more than the heaviest AcrEase (580 lbs, per Kunz). For open pasture, the 57" MR55 series covers the most ground; the 44" MR44 series is the easier fit behind a 520 on tight trails; the Pro60 series suits maintained grass. Hitch sizes are from Honda's owner's manuals.

Hitch and Tongue Setup

AcrEase rough cut mowers use a standard farm clevis, a C-shaped coupler that Kunz says gives "excellent freedom of motion in all directions." On a Pioneer 700 or 1000, use a 2-inch drawbar with a pin hole in the rear receiver; on a Pioneer 520, use a 1 1/4-inch drawbar. Drop the clevis pin through the drawbar. Skip the ball: Kunz notes a ball hitch is restricted to 12 degrees of motion side to side and up and down. The tow bar can be set to pull directly behind or fully offset to the side of the tow vehicle.

For the finish cut line behind a Pioneer, Kunz pairs its finish cut mowers with the optional ATV tongue, which hitches to the tow vehicle's existing hitch with a provided clevis pin. We stock the UTV tongue assembly for the H40B and the UTV/ATV tongue assembly for the Pro60K. For Pro60B and Pro60KWE tongue setup, call 877-203-4939 and we will confirm the right configuration.

Rough Cut or Finish Cut

Rough cut (MR44 and MR55 series) is for overgrown fields, pastures, trails, food plots, and light brush. Kunz builds them with 10-gauge decks, two blades, and a belt drive, with a conservative 2-inch sapling rating. Finish cut (H40B and Pro60 series) is for maintained grass where cut quality matters, such as large lawns, parks, and the acres around the house. Kunz puts rough cut mowing speed at 4 to 10 MPH and finish cut at 6 to 10 MPH in normal conditions. Full comparison on the Rough Cut & Finish Cut Mowers page.

Honda Pioneer Notes

  • Turf Mode (Pioneer 1000 family): Honda says "To avoid damaging sensitive surfaces, make sure to select Turf Mode." Honda's owner's manual describes Turf as rear-wheel drive for driving on turf, while the Pioneer 1000's 2WD mode locks the rear differential. That makes Turf Mode the one to use for finish cut mowing on lawns.
  • Steady speed: Honda added cruise control and a variable speed limiter to the 2026 Pioneer 1000 Deluxe. The Pioneer 520 and the 700 Deluxe and Forest trims offer an MT mode that holds a selected gear.
  • Slopes: Kunz rates Kohler and Briggs & Stratton Commercial Turf engines for slopes up to 25 degrees, and says Briggs & Stratton Professional and Intek engines should not run on angles over 20 degrees for any length of time. Kunz also notes most tow vehicles become unstable after 20 to 25 degrees.
  • Useful add-ons: the 44" and 57" electric lift kits raise and lower the deck from the driver's seat, the wetlands kit is built for marshy ground, and the hour/tach meter keeps maintenance on schedule.
  • Outfitting the whole machine: browse Honda UTV accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Honda Pioneer pull a 57 inch rough cut mower?

Yes. Kunz lists the 57" MR55 series at 580 lbs. Honda rates the Pioneer 520 to tow 1,000 lbs, the 700 to tow 1,500 lbs, and the 1000 to tow 2,500 lbs.

What drawbar does my Pioneer need?

Honda's owner's manuals list a receiver that accepts a 2-inch drawbar on the Pioneer 700 and 1000, and a 1 1/4-inch drawbar on the Pioneer 520. Use a drawbar with a pin hole for the AcrEase clevis.

Should I mow in Turf Mode?

On a Pioneer 1000, yes for maintained grass. Honda recommends Turf Mode for sensitive surfaces. The Pioneer 520 and 700 do not have Turf Mode; use 2WD on dry grass and 4WD when you need traction.

Are AcrEase mowers PTO-driven?

No. Every AcrEase carries its own engine; the Pioneer only pulls it.

Manual or electric clutch?

Electric clutch models engage the blades with a switch, so you can start mowing from the seat. Manual clutch models carry a lower price.
