That balance changes completely depending on the machine underneath them: a zero-turn scrubs its rear tires sideways through every pivot, a lawn tractor steers conventionally and asks its fronts to track straight under load, and a compact tractor running a finish deck needs a turf tire that will still handle a loader and a gravel drive.

Matching the Tire to the Machine
Zero-Turn
Counter-rotating rear wheels drag rubber sideways on every pivot, so rear drive tires wear faster here than on any other mower. Turf treads such as OTR Grassmaster and Lawnmaster spread that load; non-directional patterns like the TR-34 protect appearance on show turf.
Front casters carry weight and swivel only, so they run smooth or lightly ribbed tires in small sizes.
Riding Mowers and Lawn Tractors
Conventional steering means the front tires track rather than pivot, so ribbed patterns such as the Kenda K401 hold a line without plowing. Rear drive tires use turf treads like the K500 Super Turf, or bar lug patterns where traction on wet slopes matters more than finish.
Rear-engine riders and small decks often share caster sizes with zero-turns.
Compact and Utility Tractors

Reading Mower Tire Sizes
Mower tires use three sizing conventions, and you will see all of them in this category.
- Three-number turf format, for example 24-12.00-12. Overall diameter in inches, then section width in inches, then rim diameter in inches. Written elsewhere as 24x12.00-12; the two notations mean the same tire. This covers most zero-turn and riding mower sizes.
- Two-number format, for example 4.80-8 or 16.9-30. Section width followed by rim diameter, with no stated overall height. Common on smaller riding mower tires and on agricultural sizes.
- Metric radial format, for example 280/70R-16. Section width in millimeters, aspect ratio as a percentage of that width, R for radial construction, then rim diameter in inches. Used by radial turf tires on compact tractors.
The letter after the size is the ply rating. A and B ratings suit residential machines, C is a common commercial choice, and D or E ratings carry heavy decks, loaders, and attachments. Higher ply ratings add puncture resistance and sidewall stiffness and give up some ride comfort. TL indicates tubeless construction. Listings noting TireLiner include an internal puncture-resistant layer.
Common rear sizes across mower types include 18-8.50-8, 20-10.00-8, 20-10.00-10, 24-9.50-12, 24-12.00-12, and 26-12.00-12. Common front and caster sizes include 9-3.50-4, 4.10/3.50-4, 11-4.00-5, 11-6.00-5, 13-5.00-6, 13-6.50-6, and 15-6.00-6. Compact tractor sizes run larger, into 27-8.50-15, 29-12.50-15, and 31-15.50-15.
Getting Full Life From a Set
Inflation pressure does more to determine mower tire life than tread choice does. Under-inflation rolls the tire onto its shoulder and scrubs the outer lugs away, badly so on a zero-turn. Over-inflation shrinks the contact patch, concentrates load at the center, and increases turf marking on every turn. Set pressure cold, against the figure in your operator manual rather than the maximum stamped on the sidewall, and check it monthly during the season.
Replace drive tires as a matched pair. A new tire beside a worn one differs in rolling diameter, which makes the machine track unevenly, loads the transaxle unequally, and leaves visible stripes in the cut.
Store machines out of direct sun where possible. UV exposure and ozone degrade sidewalls over time, and a mower parked outdoors year-round often loses tires to cracking well before the tread wears out.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the right size for my mower?
Read the sidewall of the tire on the machine now, or check the operator manual. Front and rear sizes are almost always different, so record both. If the sidewall is unreadable, measure the rim diameter and the mounted tire height and call us with those figures.
Can I put a more aggressive tread on a mower?
Within the same size, yes. Bar lug and R4 patterns climb better on wet slopes. The trade is visible marking and tearing on turns, especially on manicured turf. On maintained lawns, correcting inflation usually resolves traction complaints without changing tread.
Should I buy a tire only or a complete assembly?
Tire-only suits anyone with mounting equipment or a local shop. Complete assemblies arrive mounted on a wheel and ready to bolt on. Assemblies usually make the most sense on small front and caster wheels, where mounting labor is disproportionate to the cost of the part.
What is the difference between R3 and R4 tractor tires?
R3 is a turf tread designed to protect grass, the right choice for a tractor whose main job is mowing. R4 is an industrial tread with deeper, blockier lugs built for gravel, loader work, and mixed-surface duty. R4 lasts longer in rough conditions and marks turf more.
